Planning for Emerging Technology

Metropolitan Planning Organizations (MPOs) engage in Emerging Technology planning to anticipate and integrate new innovations that can enhance transportation systems and regional connectivity. This forward-thinking approach allows MPOs to proactively address potential impacts on mobility, safety, and environmental sustainability. By incorporating emerging technologies, such as autonomous vehicles, smart infrastructure, and advanced data analytics, MPOs can improve traffic management, reduce congestion, and promote more efficient and resilient transportation networks. Additionally, this planning helps ensure that investments align with long-term goals and adapt to the evolving needs of communities.

Electric Vehicles

The Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (AAMPO) is working in conjunction with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) to assist with the development of the Texas Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging plan. This will consist of a comprehensive framework of EV Charging locations throughout the state to enable drivers to confidently travel throughout the state without concern for distance or weather condition. To learn more about the plan, view the TxDOT resource links below.

One important program to traffic management and associated congestion is the TransGuide Intelligent Transportation System (ITS). The system is housed at the Transguide facility located at the intersection of I10 and I-410 in San Antonio (3500 NW I-410, 78229). The facility is home to programs that serve the entire region and others that are more specific to the City of San Antonio. It was established in 1995 and upgrades were programmed in AAMPO’s FY 2019-2022 Transportation Improvement Program. This influx of funding allowed for reorganizing the spade to provide better coordination between Texas Department of Transportation San Antonio District (TxDOT-SAT), VIA Metropolitan Transit, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD), and reserved space for future partners. The upgrade also improved security aspects of the building and computer equipment and software.
