What is the Walk & Roll Challenge?

From May 1-31, the Walk & Roll Challenge encourages people across the Greater San Antonio area to ditch their car and commute to work or school, travel to events, or run errands by carpool/vanpooling, taking the bus, walking, biking. They record their green trips on www.NuRide.com to receive awards and prizes. Trips saved by telecommuting or condensed scheduling count as well!

In support of the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization’s Walk & Roll Program, the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) conducts the Walk & Roll Challenge to highlight the connection between transportation and air quality, to encourage the adoption of transportation alternatives, and to recognize local businesses and organizations whose employees record the most commuting and other purposeful trips taken by means other than driving alone in a motorized vehicle. In May 2017, 2,707 area residents and 19 organizations collectively saved over 1.6 million vehicle miles traveled and kept over two tons of nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds (the components of ozone or “smog”) from the air during the month-long Walk & Roll Challenge.

How do I participate in the Walk & Roll Challenge?

Any individual who lives in Bexar County or one of the seven counties surrounding it (Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, or Wilson County), is 18 years of age or older, and records their trips on Nuride.com may participate in the Walk and Roll Challenge.

Organizations and employers (located within the eight counties surrounding San Antonio) may participate and compete for awards by contacting Annette Prosterman at commutesolutions@aacog.com. Ignite some friendly competition with other corporate and community partners like USAA, Southwest Research Institute, San Antonio Water System, CPS Energy, and VIA!

What can I win?

Individuals who record three trips or more per week on NuRide may be entered to win a weekly drawing prize – a $50 VISA gift card – and individuals who record at least one trip during the Challenge timeframe may be entered to win the monthly grand prize – a $200 VISA gift card.

Organizations who significantly improve the number of employees taking more sustainable modes of transportation will receive recognition at the Walk & Roll Awards Ceremony.
